Services offered Counselling for parents and the family, parent support groups Toy Library Services for children from birth to pre-school; Directory of services for children with special needs – Child Care Information Centre (a project of UCT). We welcome referrals from healthcare practitioners or concerned relatives or friends of children with Down syndrome or any intellectual disability. Outreach services include a toy library clinic in Khayelitsha. The Down Syndrome Association of the Western Cape was established in 1976. The Association offers a variety of services and support to people with Down syndrome and similar disabilities and their families. Our services and programmes are aimed at improving the quality of life of people with Down syndrome, helping them find their purpose and take their rightful place in society. We encourage people with Down syndrome, to develop to their full potential, using their skills and abilities to contribute to their communities.

Website www.downs.org.za SERVICES: New Parent Support General Parent Support ECD Outreach in: - Garankuwa - Atteridgeville - Mamelodi - Soshanguve - Eesterust - Lotus Gardens Kalafong Hospital, George Mukhari Hospital, Steve Biko Hospital, Winterveld Clinic, BB Clinic Education Support: We provide support to teachers and schools, answer questions and ensure they have continuous support as and when needed. - Nursery Schools - Mainstream schools - Special schools - Teachers’ workshops - Webinars Education support is also provided to parents as well. Education resources are sent on our various WhatsApp groups. Literacy Programme – working with the individual and helping to strengthen their literacy and numeracy skills. Weekly Learning room on zoom for 5-11 & 12 – 17 Years olds – group learning through games and play. School to Work Transition Programme A daily skills development programme working towards supported employment. Athletics Weekly athletics training covering track and field, shotput, discus, javelin and long jump. Weekly Self-advocate Sessions Focused on what the young adults want to learn. Services offered New-born counselling for parents and the family, parent support groups and workshops for parents and siblings; Toy Library Services for children from birth to pre-school; Directory of services for children with special needs – Child Care Information Centre (a project of UCT). We are assisted by volunteers and students (UTC Speech Therapy, and Social Worker students from different universities). Outreach services include the communities of Khayelitsha and Atlantis.
