Down Syndrome South Africa was contacted in November 2008 by Mr Kingston as he had identified our organisation as one of his beneficiaries to his charity run (London Marathon). Mr Kingston identified 3 project to support, namely: Development of Outreach Support, Family Development and Empowerment and Awareness and Media projects. Training material on the Promotion and Protecting the Rights of People with Disabilities and their families has been developed. Eight branches/support groups have participated in train the trainer. The trainers will impart their skills to 50 people from each area (total of 400 people) will then be trained. Furthermore with the funding received we have been able to employ a National Organisational Development Officer (NODO) who will link directly with the media, promote our national and international Down Syndrome Awareness days and coordinate any events that we may have. A media breakfast was held to promote World Down Syndrome Day on the 21st March 2012 where we had government officials, members of media, family members and branches attend. We also had 2 guest speakers both who have Down syndrome. We have also been able to fund the new website and our NODO will update and maintain it. Three new Outreach groups have been started in areas where we had no representation before. They are in Limpopo (Letaba), North West (Mafikeng and Potchefstroom) and Northern Province (Kimberly). 3 new outreach coordinators have been employed and are running these groups. Three existing support groups are also being supported through this project. Outreach coordinators have also been employed to run these groups. They are: Eastern Cape (Port Elizabeth), Mpumalanga (Witbank) and Free State (Bloemfonein). Toys and therapy equipment has been purchased for all six groups to use with the children at therapy sessions and for home programmes. All Outreach coordinators are being trained and will be employed for a year. A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO ALL WHO DONATED TO MR KINGSTON IN ORDER FOR HIM TO MAKE THIS DONATION POSSIBLE. A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO MR KINGSTON WHO HAS MADE THESE PROJECTS A REALITY BY RAISING THESE MUCH NEEDED FUNDS!
