Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA) celebrated its first ever World Down Syndrome Day at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg on the 21 March 2006.

This day was identified at an executive meeting of Down Syndrome International held in Spain February 2005. The purpose of this day is to bring people together and raise the awareness of people with Down Syndrome accross the globe at the same time. The date 21st March was chosen because of its significance with the Syndrome. The triplication of the 21 chromosome (21/3).
